Maria RIOS LANDIN
About Me
Maria, the founder of Landin Law Firm, is a proud graduate of UNLV Boyd School of Law, where she earned a J.D. with Highest Pro Bono Honors. Now, as a bilingual family law and criminal defense attorney and professor at College of Southern Nevada, she represents leadership, determination, compassion, and knowledge.
Maria was born in Mexico and raised in Las Vegas since age 13 and is passionate about helping others. Both family and immigration law presented themselves in her life since she was only a young child when her parents divorced, and she maneuvered through complex legal battles to obtain legal status in the U.S. For these reasons, Maria became passionate about assisting others in divorce, child custody, guardianship and other family law matters, and made it her number one goal to become a licensed attorney while working at prestigious law firms in Las Vegas.
Maria’s journey in the legal industry reflects a steady ascent marked by versatility and commitment. Beginning as a legal receptionist in 2006, she became a criminal defense and immigration paralegal in 2008, transitioned to family law in 2011 and in 2020 advanced to the role of a law clerk. In March 2020, Maria was selected to teach the discovery phase of litigation at the annual Family Law Conference’s first Paralegal Boot Camp and did so proudly.
As the pandemic hit, Maria’s resilience became more evident. As she was embarking in her journey as a law school student at UNLV Boyd School of Law, her husband contracted COVID-19 and became hospitalized. Maria was by his side sharing the law as she read for her lectures. Unfortunately, she lost her husband due to COVID-19 when her second law school semester began.
However, despite her loss, she continued her legal journey and not only became more knowledgeable but gave her all to her community, as her husband would have wanted.
During law school she was recognized as the outstanding student of Adjustment of Status and Deportation Defense Class in the Community Service Program. She also received a CALI award for her excellence in Opening Statements and Closing Arguments. As a student attorney, she mediated family law cases in the Eighth Judicial District Court.
Since September 2020, she has advocated for children in foster care as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (“CASA.”) This experience has been so rewarding to her that after becoming an attorney, she began representing children in abuse and neglect matters, as part of Legal Aid Southern Nevada’s Children’s Attorney Project (“CAP.”)
Maria feels strongly about helping others in domestic violence matters and has experience not only in family court, but in temporary protective orders and criminal matters involving domestic violence offenses that constitute domestic violence, both at misdemeanor and felony levels. She presented a class at the Safe Nest shelter and at Dad Inc. Father’s workshop, which focuses on providing parenting and other resources to fathers to build healthy relationships and simply be better parents.
Maria continues assisting her community as an attorney volunteer in Ask A Lawyer sessions offered by Legal Aid of Southern Nevada, where low-income individuals can get free 15-minute consultations in family law matters.
Overall, Maria has more than 14 years of experience in the legal field. In January 2025, she was recognized as Volunteer of the month for her generous work in multiple pro bono cases in less than six months.
In her spare time, Maria enjoys singing, dancing, going to the beach, interpreting the service at church for Spanish speakers, traveling, watching movies, and spending time with her dog, Chewbacca.
Maria founded Landin Law Firm in October 2024 to change lives through her advocacy, and in memory of her husband, who not only shared her legal dream but did his best to make it come true.
